I was fortunate to have grown up in the SF Bay Area in the 60′s  and to be specific my stomping ground was the east side of the bay and there was a local band (that later gained national fame) we followed and went to see no matter where they played and of course you know I mean “The Tower of Power”

The Tower (as they’re called) is (for me) the perfect intersection of Jazz, Funk, Bob, Blues and good old James Brown style get up off your butt kind of music. I haven’t seen them in years but they do get back here to Albuquerque occasionally and it’s on the list of must do’s before I die.

Besides James Brown (whom I had the pleasure of seeing twice) The Tower is in my top 5 of must see’s.

There are many things you can say about John Coltrane and don’t worry I won’t try and say all of them in this little sample post, but let me ask you a question, what other musician, (jazz or otherwise) has a church named after  him? Coltrane does. In San Francisco  you can go to the church of Coltrane.  I’ve never been to it, though I lived in California between 1962 and 1980.

No tired old church Organ music. Nah! Trane is what you hear when you walk in the door and I can certainly understand because there are many who believe Trane was a gift sent from God.

I long for people like the Jazz greats to rise up from the grave and tell it like it is and was and the way it should be. John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan. Man I could go on forever.

What happened to the music we listen to.

I guess if you happened to believe that the music we listen to is a reflection of our culture and society at large then man we’re in serious trouble.

Anyway just a sample post and a bit of a rant.

Vintage Wes Montogmery with a classic called West Coast Blues. This is one of my all time favorite Jazz tunes. It swings and it’s got what a lot of music today does not have which is a solid rhythm that you can really sink your teeth in.

A Wes Montgomery original, Four on Six – This version was recorded live and one thing I love about this particular version is how solid the bass line is. Check it out and lock into the bass.

I was dancing so much that I somehow became lost in the dance. I wasn’t in control and I felt like I was a dry reservoir of emptiness. It was in this place of consternation that I was able to take a good look at my dancing and finally see myself as a dancer.
